Decompression Sickness

Category: Environmental & Toxicology / Diving-Related Illness

Decompression sickness (DCS), or 'the bends,' is a condition resulting from the rapid decrease in ambient pressure, typically after diving, causing dissolved gases (primarily nitrogen) to form bubbles in the body's tissues and bloodstream.

Global Prevalence

Estimated 2-4 cases per 10,000 dives, but highly variable based on dive profiles (Source: Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, 2015)
